Buller Hospital Project Update 1
Week Ending 28.03.25
The Scope team welcomes the opportunity to support the Westport community by undertaking the asbestos removal and demolition of the remaining historic buildings on the Buller Hospital site. The former Buller Hospital buildings, also known as Te Rau Kawakawa, are approximately 135 years old and have been unusable for some time.
Our work varies in complexity and scale with a combination of both Class A & B asbestos removal and demolition of multiple buildings. The asbestos works involves significant pipe lagging and debris removal throughout ceiling spaces and underground service tunnels, cement sheet, super 6 and 12 roofing, gaskets, bitumen and various other forms of asbestos.
There are 8 separate buildings requiring asbestos removal and demolition. Since establishment onsite in February we have completed the asbestos works on the laundry building. Following on from laundry we have implemented a split crew system to simultaneously work on the service tunnels and garage building. Due to the size and configuration of the tunnel network we have segregated this into 4 separate zones to allow the team to focus on one section at a time.
Working on a live hospital site requires careful planning to ensure all risks are effectively managed throughout the project. Our team have enforced strict risk management systems to ensure the operations of the live hospital site are not compromised in anyway.
On completion of the extensive asbestos and demolition works, the cleared site will facilitate the construction of a new car parking area.
