Tuakana Hostel Project Update 2
Week Ending 25.10.24
It was a big week for our team working on the Tuakana Hostel project in Napier, with the main focus being the Class A asbestos removal work.
The team targeted the pipe lagging contamination which was scattered throughout the walkways and rooms in the west wing. This contamination was a result of the theft of asbestos lagged copper pipes which were dragged through the buildings by vandals.
On completion of the environmental clean in the west wing, the team separated the east and west wing by constructing a physical barrier. This clever adaption to the methodology created two working zones and prevented contamination spreading back to the west wing.
To manage heat and fatigue our team implemented working zones. From 7.00am to 10.00am our team worked in the ceiling void carrying out a preclean of the area, removing all pipe lagging debris and wrapping the pipes ready for cut and removal. Whilst working in the ceiling void the team wore double PPE during the bulk pre-clean to significantly reduce the risk of exposure and cross contamination by removing the second suit prior to exiting the ceiling void.
From 10.00am onwards the team focussed on the preparation of the environmental clean of the walkways and rooms below. Including the removal of all carpet, skirting, wall linings and fixtures. ready for the ceiling drop. Keep up the great work team!
