Tuakana Hostel Project Update 9

Week Ending 30.01.25

And just like that our team is back on deck at the Tuakana Hostel project in Napier. Following on from the successful completion of the asbestos works on the west wing the team have moved on to the east wing focusing on the preparation of the subfloor basement area for an environmental clean.

The team ensured the methodology for the environmental clean effectively and safely managed the risks associated with working in confined space and restricted access environments. Following clearance, the team will encapsulate the soil by laying bidum cloth and applying a polymer binder over in preparation for the demolition works.

Scaffolding has been erected around the entire east wing to allow the team to safely remove the galbestos roofing, again the team were exposed to intense heat working on the roof and had to implement measures to prevent dehydration, sunburn and fatigue.

Continuing on from last year we have allocated safe working areas to Scaife Timber to remove all salvageable native timber.

We set environmental sustainability targets at the beginning of each project to ensure all opportunities to reduce our environmental impact have been considered and actioned. Our team’s high-quality workmanship has ensured that an additional 40% of concrete, on top of our initial target, will be diverted from landfill and repurposed.

Looking ahead we will continue with the asbestos removal works to enable the demolition works to commence.
