FOR PORT OTAGO

Project Type

Location
Otago

The Scope Team were engaged to demolish the 1980’s glass administration building for Port Otago. The building known as “the glass house” was located at Port Chalmers and was no longer fit for purpose. A combination of labour and machinery was used to remove all wall and ceiling linings, floor coverings, cabinetry and fixtures on all four floors, leaving behind the bare concrete structure. Our asbestos team completed the removal of the soffits and safes containing asbestos.

As the internal strip out progressed the de-glazing team followed behind completing one floor at a time ensuring all glass from the building was recycled.

The remaining concrete structure was successfully demolished under strict environmental and quality controls with all concrete waste sent off site for crushing and reuse. This resulted in over 800t of concrete waste being diverted from landfill. All metals were separated out for scrap recycling also.

The gatehouse, the smaller building between the glass house and the historic Port Chalmers Maritime Museum’s new expansion, was also deconstructed and removed. The construction method of this building was to imitate a port straddler in the way it was supported from above, which heavily affected the methodology for demolition. These demolitions left a clear site ready to tackle the land remediation works, we removed 716t of asbestos contaminated soil and laid bidim cloth ready for backfill.

Our expert team worked collectively with Port Otago to successfully manage all health, safety and environmental risks associated with working at an operational port.
